Okay, this one I can deal with.
Like Jirachi, Celebi, and Mew before it, Manaphy is a cute lil' sprite, a-frolicking around adorably, and somehow harboring great power to guard the entire ocean or something.
It reminds me of a Chao, from Sonic Adventure, which is a good thing. But I question the wisdom of entrusting all this responsibility to something so immature. That's why Celebi got beat like a drum in the 4th Pokemon movie, and Manaphy got played like a violin in the 9th one. At least Mew had the smarts to actually fight back when Mewtwo started talking shit.
Anyway, Manaphy doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it also doesn't do anything wrong. (I'm choosing to pretend Phione isn't real). I think its signature move, Heart Swap, is pretty pointless, because swapping stat changes is lame. If they use swords dance, and you want that boost, why don't you just use it yourself? Wait, Manaphy doesn't have that move. And there's probably some meta-strategy about anticipating the opponent's buff, and getting it for yourself instead. But I don't pretend to know about high-tier strategies. I just get mad at trivial things on the internet.
Overall: 7/10
Probably the most remarkable thing about Heart Swap is if ou let your opponenet buff themselves a lot, sacrifice a Pokemon, to switch to Manaphy, and then use Heart Swap.
ReplyDeleteLike, for example, if your opponent uses Belly Drum. The opponents HP is now halved, and their attack is at the maximum +6 stages. Say the also had used defense curl or something. Heart swap would steal the +6 attack stages boost (And Manaphy's resulting attack stat would be well over 800) and the defense stat boost at the same time, and the opponent would be given Manaphy's original +0 in everything at half HP.
With that said, Manaphy is a Legendary, so even though Heart Swap would be amazing when used right, it is not allowed in tournament level play, and in fact, most non-formal battles would shun you for using Manaphy.
Nobody uses Manaphy for Heart Swap. They use it for it's Hydration special ability.
ReplyDeletePeople will set up Rain and then send out this little guy. He takes a beating while using some Calm Minds. Then when he is weak enough, the little guy goes asleep using Rest. Then it wakes right back up screwing the two turn sleep because of Hydration. From there the little guy goes around happily Surfing and Ice Beaming all the suckers in his way.
Just watch from the midway of this video to see this little guy in action.

Phione should have been a pre evolution to manaphy and the whole line should've been non-legendary as they are based on an actual animal
ReplyDeleteI don't really care for either...
ReplyDeleteI always get them confused >:T
Getting the egg in Pokémon Ranger with the secret password and transferring it to D/P was pretty cool tho.
