No. 496: Servine

yeah I could make room for another serving

Servine isn't looking significantly more snake-like. It's still a portly punk with a big pointy nose, and not much tail to speak of. The limbs are smaller, which strikes me as evolutionary digression, but then again what business does a snake have, having arms and legs anyway?

More leaves is good, larger collar is good, and is it just me, or does the top of its head look like it's beginning to peel?

It falls into the same pitfall that most other 2nd stage Starter Pokemon do: not cute enough, not cool enough, a dopey mix between the two.

Overall: 4/10

  1. The leaves are just training wheels. This guy is caught in the limbo of slithering and walking. Serperior still has the leaves to its sides and other parts

  2. I know it's not your way of rating things, but I think this one deserves at least one or two points more, because he just looks right for the middle-evolutionary step. The peeling effect actually ties in neatly with his final form, as well as the disappearing limbs. If pokemon were real, this would be a complete sensible next-step, but yeah, as a pokemon, which design shouldn't really be bound to reason and logic, it's kinda lame.

  3. btw, am I the only one who thinks no new art for every Pokemon was kinda cheap?
I mean, Black&White 2 is goddamn Black&White with some small additions and changes in the environment, and that's about it. You don't have to program the whole thing anew from the beginning, no new generation, new art is kind of the least you could do, if you already do so few things already.
